” As the door slams behind my steaming six-year-old daughter (yes, that’s six, not 16) I am port side wondering what on blue planet I’m Required to do next. I have no idea. Should I conduct after her, rugby-tackle her on the stairs and behest she acquiesce to whatever insist on I had made - to hang up her layer perhaps, or methodical away her toy farm? Quite possibly, but I haven’t the energy, or, if I’m honest, the will. I platform as repentant as the next in parent of believing that benign is best, and if the outlay to be paid is picking up a few handfuls of 1:32 spectrum Friesians, then so be it. My daughter is by and large a sunny, sweet Child, so why sign a fuss when she throws an occasional strop? Yet there remains a chronic suspicion that my generation of parents has got the equilibrium wrong and that, far from our reasonable boundaries being adhered to by our with reasonable children, we are in episode in danger of storing up a host of Problems in years to come by treating our children so democratically now.
